How to Draw: Zoink

This week we will be learning how to draw a student-submitted monster, ZOINK! Zoink is shy, fuzzy, and nice. She is a great leader, good at hiding, and doesn't get discouraged easily. She has small three pointed wings and a great personality. Thanks Corryn S of Texas for this great monster!

If you would like to download the PDF version of this drawing lesson, click here.

So, on to the drawing lesson. Zoink is a fun monster to draw!

If you can draw these shapes:

 Then you can draw Zoink!

1. Draw two circles for Zoink's eye and body.

 2. Connect the circles with squiggly lines. Yours do not need to match mine exactly.

3. Draw Zoink's legs. Just four straight lines.

4. Now draw her feet.

5. Make two ovals for the eye.

6. Draw the lines from her sides to start her wings.

7. Finish her wings with two small arches on each side.

8.  Now add in the extras. Eyelashes for the eyes, a line on the wings, and, of course, her one-toothed smile!

9. Now all that is left to do is color Zoink in!  Great Job!!

And there is Zoink! Way to go!

The Town of MUB gets a New Name.

So many of the students that go to my website have helped me create a great town called MUB. Unfortunately, Monsters Under the Bed, is being used by another company, so I am not able to continue with the name MUB.  So, after some major thought and consideration over the holidays, I have decided to call the town Murb!

MURB stands for Monsters Under the Royal Bed. Here is the background story....
Late one night, tucked away in an oversized fluffy bed, little Princess Coralina, age 7, was sound asleep. She was awoken by a strange sound under her bed. It sounded like cheering and fireworks! Coralina was frightened and did not know what she should do. She was scared to think what might be living under her bed.

She decided to call her older brother, Prince Gavin, age 10. She yelled loudly and Gavin came funning in. “What is wrong, Cora?” he asked. Coralina’s nickname was Cora and her brother always called her that. So, Cora told him about the sounds she heard under her bed. He said, “I am sure there is nothing to worry about. Let’s take a look together.”

So, Cora got out of bed and she and Gavin crawled over to the side of the bed. “Oh my! I hear it too!” said Gavin, quite surprised. Now, he too was a little nervous, but would never let Cora know. As they slowly lifted up the bed skirts of Cora’s royal bed, a light shone out from under the bed!

They both gasped when they saw a tiny town! Then a creature no bigger than Cora’s thumb started walking towards them with a big smile. The creature had no arms, just two feet and two eyes and a very large smile. “Hi! I am Zizi,” said the creature. “I hope we did not wake you. We are having a celebration of the opening of our new town, Murb! We are a friendly town and would love to get to know our new neighbors better. Would you like to come meet the other Murbians?”

Zizi went on to tell Gavin and Cora more about the town of Murb and before long the three of them were laughing together and having a blast! From that day on, both Gavin and Cora visited Murb on a regular basis. They got to know all of the Murbians and found that these monsters under the royal bed were great fun and very helpful!
This story will be appearing as an abbreviated comic at the beginning of the MURB games. I hope this does not disappoint too many of the kids. Please, leave comments and let me know what you think of the change.

New Year, New Blog

I have decided that with the new year, it is time to make some changes. During the past year, I have tried to make a blog that would be interesting to others and keep them coming back for more. Of course, if anyone did, they would have quickly noticed that I did not post anything new for several months. This is going to stop... or, maybe I should say, I am going to TRY to make this stop for the new year. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to keep my blog current with information. Now, this does not mean that I will have any followers, because I am not sure that I can keep it current AND interesting! lol  But I will do my best.

On my site, www.fun4thebrain.com, I am working on creating an exciting town of learning called MUB (Monsters Under the Bed).  Many of the residents of this town were sent in by wonderful, creative kids that play the games on my site. I was so delighted to receive the entries to the Monsters contest and hear some of the feedback on the monsters once I drew them. I want the kids to be able to see how their monsters come to life.

So, once or twice a week, in this blog, I will post a "How to Draw" entry. This will show the kids how to draw the different monsters from MUB. They will get to create, not only the monsters, but also the part of the town that they will see in the games.  My goal is that, every Monday, you will be able to come to the blog and print out sheet of How To Draw certain monsters. I can't wait to hear your responses to the fun activities!

Well, so far, that is the only definite idea I have to create consistent entries into my blog. If you have some ideas for me, I would love to hear them! Do you want to hear how the games are made? Do you want to know more about me and what I do in my spare time? Just so you know, just finished watching Julie & Julia... so you can see where I got my inspiration!

I look forward to talking to you more this year! Hope you guys are ready for a great new year!

How do we get kid's BRAINS involved, not just their minds.

The way our brains function has not changed much over the years. Our brains may still think we are living in a cave, trying to find food, and the only things that can keep our interest have to be important for survival.

Our minds have changed, most definitely, over the years. We know what is important, what is required,... and it no longer thinks of rabbits as dinner. But, how can we get our brains and minds to communicate better?

Have you ever been studying for a test, and your mind really wants to study for the test, but your brain did not seem to get the message? Even if the topic is interesting, the textbook is dry and you keep reading the same pages over and over again. Your mind may be motivated, but the brain is thinking that it is boring. Your brain and your mind are in an epic battle.

In a recent conference I went to at SXSW, I listened to very interesting talk on how we can help to engage the brain in our lessons. Here are some of my notes:

Chemistry - make the brain know what matters - that which you feel is what the brain senses is important. Anything that causes a chemical signal to go to the brain, helps the brain latch onto the thoughts.

Things that are novel, strange, or a little weird, last longer in your memory. Even extreme emotions of any type help to concrete the memory. Faces really help the brain wake up!
Mystery, things that are not fully formed, the brain is tuned to figure it out.

Brain does not care about cliche', code, boring...

Talk to the BRAIN NOT the mind... they are in an epic battle.

This really got me thinking. As an educational game designer, I have the benefit of having pictures and animations to entice the brain, but am I using them to their best ability? This has challenged me to try to incorporate some of the chemistry of the brain into my future games. I would love to create a mystery, where the student is actually working through the process of solving a proof, but in a way that he/she does not even realize it until the end.

Would engaging the brain make my games different or is that the basic difference already between game-teaching and book-teaching? I know many teachers who are great at engaging the brain in the classroom. My daughter is a definite tactile learner, and she has found ways to engage her brain when it comes to learning boring information.

So, I guess that is my challenge of today,... let's engage the BRAIN, not just the mind!

Avatar of Importance??

On my website I have a contact form that generates easily upward of 30 emails a week. In the last few weeks several of these emails have been requesting a place to log-in the site and create an avatar. Most of those emails requested that the games give coins so they can purchase more things for their avatars and/or buy a house for their avatar.

While all of these options sound very cool, they are more than a little time-consuming. I do not want to make my site a "log-in required" website as I feel it would leave out many children who could enjoy the games. I have been debating, however, adding in a simple avatar/log-in. So many other sites, that are much larger than mine, are doing the avatar/house/money thing, that I figured it was overdone. But, considering the amount of emails I receive,... done or not, kids still want it!

If I were to do this, it would mean that on each page, there would be a section in the side bar that would have an avatar with a log-in. The child could create an avatar to look whatever way they would like, and then that character would greet them when they came to the site.

So, fairly soon, probably in May or June, I will be starting to implement this avatar creation process somewhere on the site. I am sure I will start with just having a face of a character. Then, if that is popular enough, I can slowly expand to their full body. I want my site to be able to offer the latest coolest thing for the kids that will not distract from their learning. So, maybe this will help keep the kids involved with the games.

It would be super cool to be able to make how many time you play the games add to the clothes that are available to you, but I do not believe that I am ready to take it to that level just yet. My site is a solo project and done with my passion for kids and education. Unfortunately, that passion does not come with money or time! lol

Thanks for reading this as I ramble on. So many thoughts are flooding into my head!!!
